Desktop Computer Packages Knowledge Base
Suggestions for a good, cheap desktop computer package for web surfing and word processing only? I'm interested in finding a very cheap desktop computer package (e.g. box, monitor, keyboard, mouse) for very basic computing, such as web surfing and word processing. No heavy gaming or memory-hogging apps like Photoshop, just very basic computing. I see that there are eMachine packages at Walmart and places like that for around $400.... is this the best deal (or the average price) or are there better deals out there? I'd be interested in hearing suggestions. Thanks.
will US desktop computer work in the Philippines? im debating if i should buy in the philippines since im coming back home but i found out that its more cheaper if i buy a desktop package here in US then send it home through LBC. i know that voltage is higher there but i can easily get away with that through voltage converter, but my question is, will it work in the philippines if i buy the computer in the US?
How does one go about shipping a desktop computer internationally? I would like to ship one or more desktop computers from the United States to Peru. I would like the computers to arrive in Peru in May or June. What is the best way to package a computer so that it won't get damaged while being shipped? Also, what company/organization should I use to ship the computers if I want to keep the cost as low as possible?
Is it safe to transport a desktop computer in a car? Every week, my mom takes my stuff from her house to my dad's. I have been doing this with my Xbox 360 but am now thinking about building my own gaming computer. It would be much cheaper and powerful if it was a desktop, and I was wondering, how safe would it be for the computer to move it in a car this often. I could package it and hate being restricted on this by having divorced parents, so is it possible and if so, how?
Why are Dell desktop packages so much cheaper than HP and other computers? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I am interested in a computer featuring an AMD 5000+ processor, i want a good video card, also a 500gb hard drive and 2gigs of ram. A TV Tuner would be a bonus. I noticed the HP package that I want is $1100 without a monitor; but the Dell package that comes with a 20" monitor is only $1049. Why is that?
what would be a better choice for a faster more powerful pc desktop computer? i do not have too much knowledge regarding processors and ram and their power behind a computer. i know that basically the bigger the better but since im on a tight budget and cant afford the whole package, which would be a faster and more powerful computer? a quad core with 2 gb ram or a dual core with 4 gb ram thanks!
fix contaminated computer, or purchase cheap-o walmart desktop? i've had a Powerspec desktop computer for almost 4 years now, and it hasn't been working the same for atleast a month. i essentially use it for my ipod and wifi, but nothing will work... not even in safe mode. i've tried restoring my computer back to the factory settings, but still nothing works properly. i've seen that Geek Squad charges atleast $200 just to look at it, and additional costs to fix the problem. if i am only using the computer for my ipod and to surf the web, would it be wise to buy a monitor-less desktop package from walmart for $298 instead of costly repairs?
Where can I get a new Desktop computer for a low price? I have a Dell right now, but I'd like to get a HP. I have a HP laptop and absolutly love it!!! Does anyone know where I can get a good price on a new HP desktop? Or any other comp besides a Dell? I already have a really good flat panel monitor and everything so I would really only need the tower part, unless it comes in a package for a really good price.
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor 4200+ vs. Intel® Core™2 Duo desktop processor E4400? i'm looking at two desktop computer packages. 1. Hewlett-Packard - Pavilion 4200+ Desktop a6000n AMD LIVE! Smarter Digital Entertainment; AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor 4200+; 1GB DDR2 SDRAM; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; LightScribe labeling; 250GB hard drive; Windows Vista Home Premium $500 2)Hewlett-Packard - Pavilion E4400 Desktop a6120n Intel® Core™2 Duo desktop processor E4400; Intel® Viiv™ technology; 2GB DDR2 SDRAM; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; LightScribe technology; 320GB hard drive; Windows Vista Home Premium $760 Both come with 17 inch flat panel monitor and all in one hp printer. Of course, i know one has more ram and hard drive than the other. My main question is about the processors. I've been told that the athlon dual core is the best out there right now, but i don't know too much about that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What new desktop computer should I buy? I'm in North Ireland and want to replace my 'Time' desktop. I was thinking of an 'All-in one' with wireless keyboard and mouse. I've searched Dell and PC World but I.m a sucker for a determined sales pitch. So does anyone have any advice? I know the speed and memory but the overall decision is more difficult., and I need Printer, Router etc as a package. Thanks

why my computer is the only one to disconnect in the home network? For some bizarre reason, at random times desktop 1 disconnects from the network. When i say disconnects, the computer sends packages of information but the router does not reply, therefore no connectivity. To resolve the problem i disable and enable the connection from the Network Connections in the control panel. Disconnection may occur anytime, i haven't noticed a pattern. The laptop though, has network connection while desktop 1 doesn't. Ive also tried bypassing the switch and connecting the wire form the router directly to desktop 1 and it still disconnects. With this configuration (wire directly to desktop 1, not through switch) i checked the connection status for the router port that desktop 1 is on, from the router configuration page and it shows that desktop 1 is connected, although desktop 1 sends packages and does not receive a reply. diagram: http://img311.imageshack.us/img311/6427/pcdiagrampk6.jpg
Have any computer packages (i.e. laptops/desktops) been released yet with Windows 7 preinstalled? Or is it just the Win7 upgrade that has been released so far? I'm wondering because my parents have a Windows XP computer that is so old it has become a bogged-down piece of crap. (30gb storage capacity...that's how old it is) I want to buy them a new computer for Christmas, and currently I have my eye on a Logitech laptop that runs XP with service pack 3. Now that Windows 7 has been released, I'm wondering whether it would be a better idea to buy one that has Win7 instead, since it's reputed so far to be a much better OS than Vista. So overall I have two questions: 1) Are there any computers with Win7 preinstalled yet, and 2) Is it a better idea to buy a computer that runs XP or Win7?
is it better to buy a whole computer pack or just the desktop? i currently have a semi old HP computer. the monitor is pretty wide but i really dont mind its size. my system is pretty old and i would like to upgrade should i just buy the desktop or would it come out as a better deal to buy the whole package? i just need a basic home computer.

Does the Microsoft 5000 Laser Notebook Mouse work for a desktop? I've recently bought a Microsoft 5000 Laser Notebook mouse off of Ebay without the installation CD and it will not work with my desktop PC (Vista Home Edition operating system). I plug the USB cord to the receiver in back, hit the connect button on the mouse but still nothing happens when I move the mouse itself. Because it says 'Notebook' on the packaging, it will not work with a desktop computer and should only be used for notebook (laptop) computers? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Which computer package is better, out of these 2? I'm 16. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I do like to game a bit. I also have a younger sister. We need a computer mainly for research and a bit of gaming. Oh and it needs to be fast too. Both of these computer packages come with a monitor, keyboard, mouse etc.. The package from Futureshop has a 23" Samsung monitor while the Bestbuy one has a HP 21.5" monitor. Which of these 2 computer package is best for us? ***** to see the specifications, you need to scroll down and click on the desktop computer ***** http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=BDL10003859&catid=24014&logon=&langid=EN http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=BDL10002056&catid=20215&logon=&langid=EN I'm currently leaning towards the Futureshop package because its quite a bit cheaper. Thanks.

Computer Rookie - need help deciding on a desktop? Help !!!? I'm ready to buy a new desktop computer for home use. I'll be buying from Officedepot but don't know where to begin. I need an entire package - hard drive, monitor, printer - need it all. I don't want to be limited on space / speed for future upgrades. Any suggestions? Links to specific items would be greatly appreciated.

How to upgrade a five year old desktop computer? I've an old desktop, i upgraded it before a few times. Now i need to upgrade it again, but i can't find the way to upgrade it. For example, i can not find the suitable processor for the main board or the rams are very expensive. I need to buy a new Desktop Computer...? I need to get a new desktop computer, but I am not sure what to get. I'm looking for something with around these specifications (or higher if possible): 4 GB Memory 500 GB Hard Drive 2.6 GHz Processor I'm not too concerned about anything else, although Bluetooth would be nice, and I don't want to have to spend too much. I use my computer for a wide variety of things, mostly work and occasionally games. I am looking for a package or an all-in-one as I do not want to have to shop for each component separately. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
Best Way to Ship my Desktop Computer? I Live in California, and I'm planning on moving to Virginia, and I'm not sure how I should get my computer there. I have a basic HP Compaq Desktop with an HP 1740 Monitor. What would be the best way to ship this to Virginia from California? And about how much would that cost? And how should I package this? Or is there a way to take it with me to the airport? Any other opinions? Also, How would or should I ship my printer? I have the HP Photosmart C5180 All-In-One printer. Is it too delicate to ship? Am i just better off buying a new one when I get to Virginia?
How much would an almost brand-new desktop computer sell for? It is a newer model HP pavilion desktop with a 20" widescreen hi-def monitor the desktop has 3gb of memory and a 500gb hard drive, (I am pretty sure it has a) NVIDIA GeForce 8200 M graphics card , it has an intel pentium dual core processor which I think runs at 2.3mhz. So if you bought it you would get Speakers, Keyboard, Mouse, Computer and monitor. I have only used it for a few months, it is in great condition and runs like new. I would throw in the microsoft student 2007 package as well. (word, microsoft ppt, stuff like that.) how much do you think I would get for it? Would I be insane to ask in the 400$-500$ range?
How long does a Customized Dell desktop package take to ship? I am going to disneyworld July 7th - July 15th. Could I order a Dell computer the day I arrive in disneyworld (on my dads laptop), and still be back home in Canada by the time it arrives? I read somewhere it takes about three weeks....BTW it's a Studio XPS 7100 with a 21.5" monitor.
What to choose for a family desktop.? I am in the market for a family desktop package. Our latest one was a rather nice Dell but it was fried by lightning (yes we had it on a surge strip, it go fried through the ethernet port in the back). We have been refunded for $500.00 and $100.00 for software and set up. This is almost nothing seeing as the computer is only a year old and had well over 1,400,00 put into it. Still this is what I have to work with. I was wondering if any one knew of any good systems that would be worth while. I have a few needs. First off that it will be compatible with windows office and photoshop (cant see why any computer wouldnt but still best to say it), have a fairly good processing speed, has fairly good memory because my daughte will r is extremely into photography and 12 megp pictures take up a ton of space, also my son haas been talking about this new game called star ship 2*, correction star craft 2 that he wants to be able to play when it is released. I am not sure what graphics card is needed for this. (I could try to salvage the radian one from my old computer. I would just go out and but the same computer we had because it worked great but money is tight and its just not in the cards at this time. Any one have thoughts on a good computer package/system that would be good for family usage? Would it be worth it to shell out the extra cash for an imac? I personally have used Toshiba my whole life and prefer pc's but im asking what would be the best for my family. I am not looking for a fanboy fight just what will serve the purpose as a family computer.
DELL Desktop and Monitor Power Cord Mix Up? I have a 3 year old DELL desktop computer that 4 times a year travels back and forth across the state with me to and from college. Nearly every time I make sure to label which power cords go to which machines, but this last time I forgot. Now I have two power cords, one to my monitor and one to my CPU and I do not know which cord goes to which. One is a Longwell E55349 10A 125V LS-13 LP-31 The other is Foxconn E301899 10A 125V FM-008 The computer itself is a DELL XPS 410 produced in 2006, and the monitor is a standard 19" that was included with the computer package. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Which computer would you recommend with the Pro tools LE and the Mbox 2 Pro? I bought the Mbox 2 Pro about 6 months ago and it came with the bundle package. I got The Protools LE software and a bunch of plugins. I installed in my Dell laptop with Windows XP. And it simply wasn't working. So then I set it all up on my Desktop computer which is also equipped with Windows XP. This worked for a little while. But now, every time I try to record, it tells me to reduce or increase the buffer size or something. Apparently it has something to do with the CPU usage. So. Basically, I just want to record. Either fix the problem on one of my current computers, or look into buying one with more compatibility. I would rather have a PC, but I am willing to explore both options. If you know how to correct any of this mess, help me out!

Restoring the hard drive in a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop computer? My computer got a virus and had to have the hard drive wiped clean. The tech doing the restore said I was missing the disk that had some drivers on it, the sound card, and the ethernet card. He was able to restore the pc so I can use it and I have internet. However, I don't have sound. I also don't have all the drivers and the ethernet parts. This disk(s) was not shipped with the pc because the package of disks was never opened until this problem. I called Dell and they won't send a new disk even though I never got the original. Can anyone supply me with a disk that will restore the sound and drivers?
What is the best computer package for under $600? I am looking for a desktop package for under 600 for my mom...I want to buy locally in Omaha, NE...so best buy Nebraska Furniture Mart Wal Mart Office Depot or Office Max. I can upgrade her RAM/Hard Drive so I'm shooting for the best Processor...I would guess Dell is better than HP. so far I've been looking at Dell's with Intel Celeron 440 'n' 450 processors...what's your recommendation? Send me a link if you find me a good deal! thanks all
What are the different types of RAMs for desktop computers? If you'll read my earlier question about my accident putting the ram in you'll know what I'm talking about. But anyway the new ram that I put in was apparently the wrong size. It was brand new ram but when I compared the new ram next to the old ram (6 months old) and the notch in the middle in the old ram is literally less than a quarter of an inch different. The package for the new ram says it is DDR2. So would the other kind be DDR? If so what are the differences? Thanks. Sorry, My computer model is Dell Dimension B110. The ram I put in was DDR2. (at least that's what it said on the box)
How do I use Recovery Discs (2 DVDs) to restore or to recover my computer to its original factory settings? I bought an HP A6540D Desktop Package from a computer store. It has Genuine Windows Vista pre-installed with few HP add-ons. The salesman asked me to buy 2 DVD-R discs and launch a program called "Recovery Disc Creation". The computer took about 1 hour to finish the writing process. The writing of files on both DVDs were successful. Now, I want to use those discs to recover my PC to its Original Manufacturer Settings. How do I use those disks to recover my PC? The 2 DVDs doesn't contain any instructions or setup launchers. The computer also said that only one set of recovery disks can be made per PC. Do the trials and OEM software will be re-installed? And do the installed programs will be removed? Please provide a step-by-step procedure on using the 2 Recovery DVD disks! Please also answer the other questions above! Thanks for the reply!
Can I view these monitors on this Desktop computer.? My largest monitor says that it is best to be viewed with a dual graphics card installed and I must have a dual graphics card installed to view multiple monitors (the smaller for input, larger for output) correct.? I do not see a graphics card any where on this configuration, is that a problem.? if so, can I have a graphics card seperatley installed.? need help on new hp computer? So I bought a new hp desktop computer with the whole package monitor, key board, mouse, and printer. It was my first time turning it on. It had windows vista, just to let you know. when I turned it on, It was configuring the monitor and such. It was amazing til It came to the part with registering the computer. There was like 4 screen that popped up and it went to the 1st one which was online registration. when it pulled up my screen went blurry and I couldn't fill anything out. so I turned it off by pressing the off button on the hard drive. Does anyone know if this is a major problem? I turned it on again later that night and it didn't bring me back to the registration, security stuff, etc. any help would be appreciated. also I bought it yesterday. Idk if I should return it and get a new one?
Buying a new computer? Looking for something that would hopefully be a package deal for a desktop computer -- it is for a first time computer owner and would pretty much only be used for Word type stuff and then the internet. Any suggestions. I would also like for it to be semi cheap. I just don't know what I can do with or without as far as the GB and all the numbers they throw at you...
Is this a good gaming computer able to play newer games at high setting? i wanted a gaming desktop that will able to play all new games at ultra high setting problem is i dont now much about pc. How do you get rid of Vista off a new PC? My husband bought a new desktop computer about a month or so ago. At first Vista seemed ok, but now we are having all kinds of problems with it. He can't print because Vista is incompatible with our printer, funny because both the computer and the pc are hp. He just got a video camera with a hard drive in it. We can save the images to his computer but when he went to install a new video editing package on the computer Vista kicked it out. He's sick of it and wants to delete Vista from the computer and go to Xp. But he is having all kinds of issues with it. Help! I am sick of listening to the cussing because the computer won't do what he wants it to. And he is a trained computer tech, so he's not computer illiterate or anything. But his frustration is getting to me. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Also any links to any advice would be nice.
Was this a good deal on a computer? I bought a new desktop computer last week. It was a bundle package with 4GB and 640GB hard drive with 22" monitor for $499. Was this a good deal? It was a Dell I'm not a gamer at all
Did I get a good deal? I bought, a few days ago, a new Dell desktop computer package for $690 including tax. It has a core 2 quad processor (4 MB L2, 2.33 Ghz 1333 FSB) , 6gb of ddr2 ram 800 MHz , 620 gb of 7200 rpm SATA hardrive with databurst cache, ATI Radeon HD 3450 256MB video card, Windows Home Premium 64 bit, a 20 inch Widescreen monitor, and a keyboard and laser mouse. I previously have found Dell to be a little expensive, though still good quality, and would have went with someone like tigerdirect or buy.com. However, i have looked everywhere and find that this is by far the best deal by a long shot. I challenge you to find a better deal for the price give or take $50. Link to the deal...

Our computer has a virus. How can we fix it and prevent it from happening again? We believe it's a virus. We try and access differant web-sites and the screens keep changing. Also, we are finding strange icons on our desktop. We tried downloading a free microsoft virus protection package but it didn't help. Should we take the computer in for repair or have a technician come to the house? This computer is a few years old and apparently the virus protection package that came with the system has expired. Help!!!!
Where can I find a computer that isn't going to break the bank but has the capabilities I need? I will soon be working from home and need to buy a computer (it can be either a desktop or a laptop, it doesn't matter). If I get a desk top, I want a package that has everything included. Not only will it be my home office computer, it will also hold my music, pictures and I will taking internet courses for college. I have looked at Best Buy and others. Basically I am wondering if there is this awesome computer site that has lower prices that I am missing. Any help is appreciated!
What is the best antispyware and virus protection for your computer? I upgraded my hi-speed with Qwest. they have me a package with McAfee, Spyware and Fireball. But I keep reading on the web about others that sound so good. Am I fully protected with what I have? Will this protect me from Adware. I have the highest speed but my computer seems so slow at times. Sites have indicated that I may not be cleaning my computer to get everything? I have followed all the advice given to me but it seems like it should be faster. Sometimes it is fast, other times it's not. I have only my virus program of McAfee and Spyware and my sound and clock running on my start up. Also, if I have a lot of icons on my desktop (some with shortcuts to a program) would that slow down my computer. Also lots of photos and large screensaver running. Thank you, the more I read, the more confused I get.
Is this a good deal on this computer package? http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/217084/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do I think this is the best deal I have found on a computer. I play games every once in a while, but is not the main reason I want it. I want to hold around 1000 songs on Itunes. I like multitasking, like listening to music while doing my work. This is going to be an average home computer. Does this computer fit my needs and worth the price? I am looking at the $820 package offer not the $599 desktop price.
computer memory upgrade I haquestion? I have a 5 year old Dell Desktop computer, and I am already at the maximum amont of memory - 1 GB - and since I started using photoshop regularly I've been hitting the limit with memory on a regular basis. I can't put any more memory in this machine without buying another one at least that's what I'm fnding right now. The only thing I know I can do is to buy memory management software, but I dont' know what packages to buy - any ideas? thanks
How can I reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows XP without the CD? My Toshiba Satellite has slowed to an extremely slow pace after barely a year, and its definitely time to reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything. The problem is that Toshiba didn't include an XP installation CD in the package. I have the verification codes taped on the computer. I also have an OEM copy of Windows CD from a desktop computer at home. Can I use the OEM version to install windows after reformatting the hard drive, and use the laptop's security code to verify the installation of XP? Or can I copy the I386 folder to a blank CD and install XP from that? Anyone have any advice on how I should go about this?
What hardware should I include for a Game Design/Programming computer? I need a computer that can handle Game Design & Programming, but I don't know what hardware the computer should have regarding HD space, memory, processor speed, video & sound cards? Also, what brand name should I trust? Overall, I'm wondering what brands & hard ware would best suit my needs. I saw an HP Pavillion Media Center Desktop (Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 3 GB RAM, 640 GB Hard Drive) for just under $1200 (on Amazon). I'm not sure if this is overkill or if the Quad Processor fits my needs - or will a Dual Core will be enough - I don't want something that'll cause delays as I try to test games I design & my husband feels a HD with 250 GB's is more than enough. Any help? I refuse to use Dell's, I've had terrible experiences w/them. I am on a budget, which makes a package system that's upgradable seems the best route to me. I'd like it to last for at least three years without dying on me. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Yes, I'm taking classes to learn how to design/program games. We're taught in either Visual Basic, C++ or C# (we have to choose which one we wish to excell in) - we're also taught MMORPG, first person modification with the Unreal engine, simulation design and AI design/programming. Anything else I'm not 100% on so I'd rather not say and find out I didn't need a part of a computer for it, or I did. I'm just starting out, and I'm taking classes online so my programs are done via virtual computing (?) - I login to another computer through the internet and can launch a program like Visual basic and program and test it via that computer - forget what it's called. But I also want to be able to purchase the programs through my college inexpensively to make my own games too and test them. I have an RPG I'd like to work on so programs like 3D modelers I'll be using as well (that I already know how to do). I appreciate the input so far, thanks :) btw, I play games, but I'm kinda new to the whole creating games, So I'm not sure what DX10 games are. I used to build computers but the newer technology has surpassed me now. I'm 32 but still consider myself computer savvy, the lingo still get's me a little confused once in a while though. The buying hard drive space cheap makes sense, I've seen HD space cheap lately too. My only question is what is a good brand that is reliable that will let me swap out the HD? Dell was a nightmare to swap things around. Like Video Cards, sound cards, forget HD space - my current dell while four years old, was still sent out with a VGA video card which shocked me. I don't want to end up in that situation again. I really want to be able to switch and change things around as much as I like. I like the idea of how a lightscribe burner lets you burn labels right onto the disk too, is it worth the price? I haven't checked the price differences lately.
What's the best desktop PC to get? Hi there, I'm looking to buy a desktop computer. It needs to be superior for gaming and be in the price range from upto £2000 I have no interest in building my own pc and am considering getting a Mac desktop, thought I feel it is too expensive for its package. If you look at http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODCATEGORYVIEWPAGE&USG=APPLICATION&ENT=APPLICATION&KEY=71810 you can see some of the computers which I am currently interested in in this price range. If someone could find better pc's in this price range, that'd be great!
