  1. This probably isn't what you wanted to hear but it will be about half the price if you either buy the components yourself and build your own, or you get a private company to build a PC to your specification. Failing that, Dell are a rip-off who overcharge for their brand name. It's not really important about the brand, as long as you have at least 2gb of RAM, a decent graphics card i.e. around 512mb and preferably a dual core processor like the AMD X2 5200+. Insuring this will mean your computer is future proof.
  2. I personally have all Dell products at home and HP at work. I like Dell, but HP always gives me problems weather it is the computer, printer or fax. It never works, freezes up or poor print quality. Now my Dell at home has a great warranty and I can always rely on it to do what the HP cant. I do not know anything about Acer or labor day sales, you can check these stores online for that.
  3. acers usually hav da best value for money and quite good performance
  4. Buying a desktop computer depends more on your personal needs and budget, not necessarily the brand. Right now, HP is the sales leader followed by Dell. Acer is bringing up the rear and, if they are able to buy Gateway as they are currently trying to do, that should easily put them in third place. All three make fairly good machines or they would not have had the sales to put them there. You will find devoted fans of each one here for their own reasons. The important thing is to compare prices and specifications and choose one that best meets your needs, regardless of the brand. They all basically use the same or similar components. Quite often the stores that you mentioned have Labor Day sales (less so for Office Depot). You will just have to check them out to see if they have one for what you are looking for. Don't forget CompUSA and Circuit City in your search. You can also order directly online from these as well as from the computer makers themselves. Personally, I would rather build my own computer. The big makers can buy their components a lot cheaper than the average person can simply because of the volumes that they buy. I pay more than they do for parts, but I don't have to pay for someone else's labor, overhead, and profit margins to assemble them and I just enjoy doing it. That way I can usually build a little bit better machine than I could buy off the shelf for the same money.
  5. They're all equally crappy (built on an assembly line by cheap unskilled labor with the cheapest quality parts the manufacturer could buy). Just get one with a dual-core processor, 2gb of RAM and at least a 250gb hard drive. If you want to play games, you'll have to buy a real graphics card and will probably have to upgrade the power supply.
