Why did laptops out sale desktops all of a sudden?

Me being a owner of both, several desktops and one really great laptop. I personally find desktops still the superior computer and almost as versatile (lets face it laptops always win in the mobile categories.). However I has just occured to me....Could laptops be saling so well today because eveyone already owns a desktop, or is it that laptops are a fad. What ever it is, laptops cost the same today as they always has.

1. Laptop technology is catching up with desktops.. by that I mean the processors and video cards are becoming better in laptops. Before, laptops only had mobile processors. Now the 'mobile' processors are dual and even quad core. Also the video cards in these machines are good enough to play some common games.
2. I think the average people don't need a very high-end / fast computer so they would rather have an good laptop for everyday use that is portable. For college students like me, having a desktop would be a hassle because if when ever I move, it would be difficult to move desktop with me. Laptops allow me to go to cafes with it when I want to. Another reason might be that laptops prices have gone down a lot and more people can afford them.
3. You Know, Since I Have A Laptop, I Feel Its Better Than A Desktop In These Ways...It's Portable And Wireless! So I Have Internet On The Go, And It's Not Bulky! But It Does Lack The Memory. But I Think You Can Get More??? IDK But Yea, That's Why I Prefer The Lab top...But That's Just Me lol
4. well, I agree with one of the other posters about the technology finally 'catching up' as one part of the reason... but I think that the other part of the reason is CONVENIENCE and market saturation. Market Saturation: a household has one, maybe two desktops... but one or more OTHER members of the household may opt for a laptop as a more portable/convenient/flexible option (students, freelancers, etc.) ... Take my house for example. There are two desktops (mine and hubby's) and six laptops (my son, hubby, and I have four laptops, three of which are currently dust-gatherers - LOL). I do graphic design work and HAVE to have state of the art hardware in order to do my job effectively... wanna buy a laptop? ;) Hubby calls me a computer whore... but I call it tax writeoffs! LOL...
