how do I get rid of the administrator account on a HP desktop?
I just bought on a yard sale a nice HP desktop computer, it runs great, it has Windows XP. I would like to know if there is a way to get rid of the administrators account, so I can set the computer up for myself. When I try to change anything even logging in into the administrators account is asking me for password, which obviously I do not have. I went back to the yard sale to ask for the password, but the guy told me that a friend of his gave it to him and he has no way of getting the password, he said just take it to a computer geek and he can reset it for you, but that cost money that I do not have right now, I want to know if anyone knows how to do this and can show me, I will greatly appreciate all the help and advise. I do have access to the computer since it has another account set up but it is restricted, that is why I need to be the primary account, but for that I need to gain access to the administrator change it and reset it, but I do not know how without the password. Can anyone help? thanks Yesenia Thanks for all the advises, I do not have the XP windows cd, I have Windows Vista operating CD, will that work too on this desktop? Another thing only the computer administrator can change, delete or create an account, so I cannot do anything at all, any other suggestions, oh and where can I get the XP operating systems CD?

- Go to control panel, then accounts, add/remove
- do not do this
- Controll Panel
- try restrating ur computer and then login in safe mode. and remove the password.
- The best option for you, and most likely free, is to reinstall Windows. This will format the hard drive and remove unwanted applications and likely a bunch of files from a previous owner. If you have the Windows XP disk or a recovery disk then simply place it in the disc drive and restart the computer. This should load Windows setup and follow the instructions. Good luck! **EDIT** Without knowing the specs on your PC I cannot tell you whether or not Vista will run on your computer. I recommend a minimum of 2 GB of ram for Vista. You can purchase an XP CD online on Amazon for pretty cheap.
- go to mycomputer..and then cotrol panel..and then user accouts...create your own account..make it administrative when your setting it up..dont make it a limited acount..and then log off of the account you are on and log into your own accout that you have just created...then go to My computer again..control panel..and user accounts... Select the old administrative account and click delete =]
- If you want to change that go into the administrator's account and then click delete. First you may need to change the administrator to a different account.
- It is impossible to delete an administrator account.
- if it's an hp you should be able to create your own user account and the delete the previous one.. oh, also, just press enter when it asks for password at least worth a try if that does not work, turn off computer, just before it logs into windows (as its booting) start hitting the F8 key, keep pressing alternately press/release/press/release this will enable you to go into the main frame you can turn off paasword protect there. AND, IF ALL ELSE FAILS...call hp 1800hpinvent give them the serial number and they will provide you with a brand new recovery disc, sometimes though, they have to charge you. (anywhere between 0 dollard to about 30) good luck
