Desktop Computer Packages

When is the best time to buy a laptop for college?

I need a laptop before I go to college, and want to know when is the best time to buy one? (i.e. when do new models come out, when are the best sales, etc...) I might need one ASAP because my desktop computer recently died and perhaps Christmas would be my best chance to get a good deal? If it makes a difference, I'm looking at a Dell XPS M1530. I really have no interest in a Mac.

  1. It doesn't really matter when you get a laptop. There are always sales. There are always good deals.
  2. Get a MacBook
  3. well for college i would say a mac book becuase it has advanced publishing and graphics, but the xps laptop your looking into by dell is more of less a gaming laptop, so the stuff the laptop has to offer you wont be using so theres no point having it. so mac book is the best, but if you want to keep with windows 1525, however you could get the laptop you said but just dont pick all the high end graphics cards etc
  4. Check out these sites, and make some research. Get a deal when you think it's one: www.dealnews.com www.gotapex.com
  5. Well, stores usually have the "after-christmas sale". I would personally get a MacBook Pro if I was you. They're GREAT school computers and whatnot. Oh, and Apple usually comes out with new models of their products around September...usually.
  6. Wait as long as you can, but definitely buy from the university bookstore if you have a choice, especially for any software using your student discount. (80% at my school.) From experience, you don't need a laptop that can launch the shuttle and you will definitely abuse it more than you can imagine no matter how careful you are. I have a Dell XPS but if I had it to do over I would go to several local computer shops that can build you a laptop with as much memory and speed as possible in a softwareless package. He'll probably even find an XPS case for everything. As far as size, bigger isn't better for school, you need something extremely portable and if this your first year you may not realize how small most university seats (not desks) are. GL.
  7. Like has been said above, if you look you can always find deals. So, if you need one why wait. The notebooks you see so cheap like on "Black Friday" are typically low-end models that aren't worth beating your way through a line of screaming silver haired ladies. The XPS line from Dell are a really great notebook and would be a fine choice. I scored one on their outlet section for a few hundred less than retail and still got free shipping plus discounts. It's a gift for my daughter who is also in college.
  8. I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com (http://procompare.com/top/notebooks). They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops and other tech products based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU. Hope you'll find this answer useful...
