Ways to recondition a laptop battery?

We have a laptop that is 2-3 years old now, and the battery only lasts about 40 minutes or so. Is there a way to make it last longer like it used to, like wearing it down a few dozen times all the way and recharging it? its a lithium ion battery. And they are $120 even from a wholesale battery place. So buying that and some new memory for the computer is a bit pointless, I can buy a new cheap laptop that is faster for $300-$400.

  1. A battery that old is hard to recondition, maybe even impossible. You can try completely draining it and recharging a few times, but I don't think it will work.
  2. I wish I knew. My laptop battery needs reconditioning too... I know the old macs back in the late 90's had reconditioning software, but thats the only computer I've seen that has it
  3. Lithium Ion batteries cannot be reconditioned. They get old. You replace them. That's it. The chemistry that is involved in Lithium Ion batteries means there is nothing you can do about it. 2-3 years sounds about right for a replacement. Check prices with a reputable supplier on ebay.
  4. No, sorry. It's reached the end of its useful life. All li-ions do that, most within 2 to 3 years... some in as little as 1 year, a few are still going strong after 5. In fact all rechargeable battery types do this. You have to replace the battery in your car every so often... same thing here. The one lower-cost option is to have the battery "rebuilt". There are companies that do this, basically putting new cells in an old battery case. Results are mixed. btw so-called "reconditioning" programs are not really about "reconditioning" the battery. Their purpose is to recalibrate the battery's charge level circuit. If you had such a program it would not necessarily get any (or much) more runtime out of the battery; it would just make the "remaining runtime" indicator more accurate. The charge monitor circuits have gotten better over the years so most modern laptops don't need these "recalibration" programs.
  5. I suggest you buy a new replacement one ,may be you can buy in ebay or some websit such as http://www.lithium-batteries.net/ http://www.batteries-world.co.uk/ Good Luck
