Why doesn't my computer spot these drives?
I have 2 drives on my computer: Memorex 52MAX 325216AJ and a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5112 My computer says it can no longer find the drives. Why is this? I got a code 41 and replugged the IDE cable. Now I am confused because it shows up but the device can't be found. Then I uninstalled the drivers thinking that would help, but now it gives me a Code 19 saying a hardware error. Is there anywhere I can find the hardware for these drives on the internet? I think everything is plugged in, but it still isn't working. Any suggestions or links to forums would also be appreciated. All right I misphrased the question. My computer spots the drives but I get the alert symbols anyways. These are not new drives. I have had them installed for a half year. They are plugged in and recognized by BIOS. Today all of a sudden they just won't read CD/DVDs and they don't show up in my computer.

- few things to check : Make sure power and IDe cables are firmly plugged in (i find sometimes I knock out a power cable etc by mistake while adding another drive in) If both drives are on the same bus (i.e. the same IDE cable) make sure one of them is set to Master, and the other one to Slave. There are jumpers on the back of the drives to do this (and a label on the drive themselves to say which drives are Master/Slave). If the drives are sharing a IDe cable with a hard drive, they still have to be set; one as the Master and one as the Slave. You can only get up to two devices on one IDe cable, if there are two devices one has to be set as master and one as slave. If there is only one device on a IDE cable, set that device as master. Dont go by what the operating system says - check your Bios first to see if the drives are picked up. Going into your Bios is usually the F2 key while the pc is first switched on (it should say this somewhere on the screen but it only appears for a few seconds). If the Bios cant see the drives, theres something wrong - usually loose power or Ide cable or incorrect master/slave setting. If your Bios sees the devices go into Device manager once windows has booted up to see if the devices appear in there. If they have yellow question marks then its a driver issue. Hope this helps
