My computer is constantly crashing and has been for months now: I need serious help please?
For months now (many of them) my PC has been crashing after about only 2 or 3 minutes of web surfing. The whole operating system crashes often and if that doesn't happen, the screen will freeze, leaving nothing operable. I have asked this question on many forums but no one can help so please please can anyone here help? Im in dire need of PC assistance. i run windows xp home edition on an Intel Celeron system. I can only use the PC in safe mode as of the last year or so and the last few months of the year, my OS constantly crashes in Safe Mode too The last 3 months or so i have noticed this harbinger to a crash...the system will come up with a small error box on the screen saying Protection:45 and upon clicking OK, the PC 8 times out of 10 crashes (whole OS). I have always been of the impression that my modem (as hardware) is causing the issue) as when it is not connected, the PC doesn't crash. My connection line is fine but i think the modem itself might be the cause I am connecting to my PC via Ethernet so maybe the crashing is due to a connection the modem is trying to make with the PC but it ONLY ever crashes with such regularity when the modem is switched on. error messages in Error Viewer upon reboot state errors such as DCOM (in system error) and VSS and Eventsystem (in Application error) besides others. sometimes when rebooting it will even say corrupt file ntoskrnl.exe and it asks me to reboot all of windows. I then can restart my PC again and it won't state this but still crash soon into surfing the net. The BSOD is a feature i see quickly before the majority of OS crashes (it flashes on for a split second only). Please can you help me???? After a quick check upon boot up, my CPU Temp is 47 celcius/109 degrees System Temp is around 32 celcius normal or bad?

- Why don't you buy a new modem and try again? They're really cheap. Otherwise, I'd suggest you format the hard drive and reinstall your OS (Make sure you have all your disk b4 doing this though!). I'd install each piece of hardware bit by bit (Starting with the modem) and see what causes the machine to crash. You don't say how old the machine is or how much memory you are using etc. Did you buy the system with XP installed or did you upgrade?
- Modems are fairly cheap at this time, if you think that is what the problem is why don't you get one and try it out? Run at least two spyware programs, make sure that everything on our system is up to date, i.e. drivers, patches, run a couple of virus protector programs... What does your event log tell you just before a crash? That would be the first place that I would look to enable me to fix it.
- download ccleaner its free you probally have a lot of registry issues on your system this program will clean them for you
- It's very hard to fix computer problems without actually having the company in front of me, as there are many reasons why your computer is acting like this. My guess is that you have a "worm" in your computer. It sounds very fimilar to the Sasser worm that hit computers about 4 years back. I wonder, does your screen countdown before your computer shutsdown or freezes? I really believe it is a worm because as you said, it only happens when you're connected. The worm sends signals to the host, telling it to shut down once on the net. To get rid of it...you could do two things...if it is in fact a worm. If it's the sasser worm, go to google, type in "sasser", find the patch and apply it. If it's another worm and not sasser, you would have to get a worm remover program. Go to www.download.com search "adaware". This program looks for ads, and worms and will attempt to remove them. Lastly, if these don't fix it...there is always the ultimate fix....you could format your computer, and reinstall windows. To do this, make sure you have everything you need saved on cds or disks. Then insert your windows cd, and restart your computer. Your computer should be default set, to book windows from the cd instead of your hard drive. Instead of goign to WIndows XP, your windows cd will cause your computer to ask if you want to format and reinstall windows. Just follow the instructions. The format and reinstall will fix any problems, unless hardware related. I really do believe this is a worm at work, and not your modem as you described....if you want more help, feel free to contact me. Just click on my name and send me an e mail. Edit: I forgot to mention, I have "fixed" about 7 computers with similar problems to yours before, and only in one instance was it not a worm.
- Try downloading ADVANCED WINDOWS CARE. Someone answered a question yesterday with this and I immediately tried it. I have tried many other's, but this one is really great at cleaning up your computer. I am really impressed. Have had no crashes since and my computer is working so much faster. And it's free. Good Luck. x
- Look on device manager and see if there are any issues with the modem (the driver may need updating through the manufacturors web site) if the modem is ok boot into recovery console if it is installed, if it is not installed put the xp cd in and install it. From recovery console you can try and repair the master boot record etc if this does not help try and do a system restore, this will restore your system and you will not lose any files or documents.
- help and support type the error in search while online. you can also get microsoft updates through help and support. services.msc type that in, RUN make sure ones that need to be started are.if your not sure don't start any. Some are started only when needed. make sure you fire wall s are working and you have a anti-virus for your system. you can right click this page to print it. also you might type in RUN when you restart;sfc /scannow.THERE is a Space between; c / .GOOD LUCK
- have your fan looked at!! ours was crashing and it was the fan good luck
- Some additional system specs would be helpful. The most common causes for crashes and freezes are: 1. Spyware and Viruses 2. Heating issues 3. Weak/dying power supply 4. Motherboard going bad. 5. Corrupted Operating system/software conflicts First you need to make sure the system is clean of spyware and viruses. I use AdAware, and Spybot S&D for general spyware/adware scanning and cleaning, Trend Micro's Housecall online AV scanner, and HiJackThis for more serious problems. Once you get clean scans from all three scanners, use HiJackThis to make a log file and post it in the forums at www.spwareinfo.com and they will evaluate it for you. Once you are sure the system is clean, address any possible heating issues. Open the machine up and clean any dirt and dust from inside, particularly arounf the CPU fan and heatsink. Dirt tends to cake up on the heatsink fins, reducing its cooling efficiency. Once the inside is all clean and spiffy, if you still have problems, try installing a new power supply. You don't have to spend big bucks on one, a decent one will run you $20-$30. If you have the software CDs, try re-installing to Operating System, or restoring the system to factory specs. Last of all, if all the above does not rectify the problem, rebuild the system with new motherboard, RAM and CPU.
- Apart from the obvious overheating problems (blocked vents, dirty fans etc) think about the following: In general terms the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) can be caused by many different problems and Windows has shut down in order to protect the system. Most BSOD problems are caused by installing new incompatible software or indeed new hardware that has an incorrect driver or somewhere something has become corrupt. In any event you might just be able to roll back your system to a good state before the problems started occurring: Re-boot your system in Safe Mode: This can be achieved by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. You should now see an option to boot your system at the last good boot – select this and if it works give yourself a pat on the back. Assuming the above failed it is possible that your boot sector or boot files on your hard drive have become corrupt. You can attempt a fix by booting from your ‘Recovery’ CD and following the instructions for ‘Repair’. If and when the repair has finished you will get the C: prompt. Now type chkdsk /r (NOT chkdsk/r but chkdsk space /r) and press return (enter). This means run a program called check disk and repair any faults found on the hard drive. Sorry but we have not yet finished because I am now going to assume that your Windows Loader file is corrupt and it is this that is causing your BSOD message. First of all you need to have your C prompt sitting at the root directory of your hard drive. This can be achieved by typing cd c:\ We need to rename your corrupt loader file by typing ren ntldr ntldr.old – did you get an error message? If so you might not be at the root directory so try cd c:\ again and then rename the ntldr file. Now we must copy your good original loader file from the Recovery CD and put it back into the root directory of your hard drive. For this exercise I am going to assume that your CD drive is drive D but it could be drive E or even F so replace the D in my instructions with your own CD drive letter. Here goes: Copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ In English – Copy SPACE D:\i386\ntldr SPACE c:\ How to correct the error message “Corrupt ntoskrnl.exe” Again substitute your CD drive letter in this instruction: Type expand D:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex C:\windows\system32 You will be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file – type Y and press enter. Now reboot your system – good luck. WDW
- Unwanted scripts are doing this problems. Navigate to C:/Heap41a and delete the contents of the folder. Scan the full system and download the Regcleaner (registory) and scan the system and fix it.
- Registry cleaner needed.
- You'll have to go to "start"..."Run" and type in MSCONFIG When the windows pops up go to the "startup" and "services" tabs...and uncheck anything that looks suspicious...don't uncheck any Microsoft programs...Click Apply....system will want to reboot....reboot....a window will appear saying you made changes to the startup......put a checkmark in the small box bottom left...your done. Go to http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10726661.html?tag=lst-0-1 and download a free antivirus program called AVG and run it through the system...also go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134 and download "Windows Defender"...again its free. Let both programs scan the computer. Good luck
