1. The most common one most businesses use is MS Project. But, the licenses for that are expensive. The advantages: Easy to map out project steps. Good visual displays of calendars, critical paths. Easy to assign resources (people, equipment, etc) and see where there might be competing needs for a single resource. Easy to share project plans with others. Flexibility in calculating critical path. Easy to forecast dates and completion milestones.
2. Most people focus on the scheduling tools. Remember you also have to manage risks, issues, actions, variations, budgets and expenditure, documents etc. Check out our project management package called Project Administrator. It will assist you do all the other stuff.
