  1. How much are you looking to spend? What do you want to do with your system? Cheapest system that is decent for all around use I would say is: AMD 3700+ socket 939 gig of corsair valuselect 939 mobo with sata and pci-x Nvidia 7600gs or Ati's X1300 Then the rest (DVDRW/ROM, HDD-SATA, NIC, Audio) are really around the same prices for the lower end stuff, its up to the user really.. But your looking at around 700$
  2. these spec are vista complatible so if u decide to go to vista it's really good. CPU: look for atleast 1.5ghz or more... 2.0ghz is good already. AMD XP is cheapest go higher if u got money ram: 512mb, otherwise 1gb, video card: find one that has a buildin videocard liek shard video. that will save you money if you're not playing to play intense gaming. otherwise a good videocard goes for around $100.. perfer any NVIDIA GPU 5000 series and up. Hard Drive: 120gb is fine and should be good to go.. Sound Card: try to get one that is buildin motherboard thats pretty sums it up.. the else is your desire. i build around this for only 450 bucks w/o montior and i'm still runing XP smooth.(3 years ago)... if i was to build this now. it's only like 250 dollars or so... depend on where you buy them. this spec should allow you to surf internet smooth, run program smooth... and watch and edit photo :).. if you are going for video editing a lot and gaming.. you need to buy a more powerful Video card and More Ram..
