my compaq desktop computer will boot and will shutdown unexpectedly?

i have tried to reset the cmos and ram but it stills shutdown. the shutdown does not have a time interval it does not restart. and it started after we had an ice storm that caused a power surge in my house. the fans are working.

  1. might be spyware or a hack, exp. if its booting up by itself but if its just shutting down by itself it might just be it over heating in witch case you need to clean or replace the cooling fan
  2. Check to see whether the heat sink on you CPU is still tight and snug. Your CPU might be overheating. If it's not your CPU you should also check for any chipset heat sinks and the fan on your graphics adapter. Is it spinning still? After it shut down, will it reboot right after? My first guess is some kind of heat problem.
  3. I used to have that problem. It is problable heating. Check the ventilation, it's probably jammed, full of dust, maybe fans are not even working properly. I dismantled mine, clean the vents and the fans and reinstall it. I used the same thermal paste but some people reccomend to change it. Maybe install some temperature control software like cpu-z to control temp. Should be between 40-60 celsius for a laptop, probably cooler for a desktop.
