How could i completely wipe clean an IBM laptop hardrive without signing into the computer?

i forgot my password and i need to clear every bit of information on the computer, is there a way to do it without turning on the computer ir singing into the computer

2. drop in your windows install cd boot the pc and go into your bios set it to boot from cd reboot and boot from cd delete the partition with the tools on the boot cd shut down the laptop after the partition is cleared voila... blank hard disk easy
