Building a cheap gaming pc?

I wanna build a gaming pc. Something that could cost me less then 800$. I have never built my own pc, but people say its cheaper and better to make one instead of buying somthing like an alienware. Is it possable to make somthing even cheaper and to play games like Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Crysis, or mass effect? If you got any suggestions please put links on where I can buy parts or how I can build my own.
