How do I know if my dell desktop computer has a modem? My cable internet company asked me this b4 they hook up
basically, im moving to a new apartment, and i called comcast cable to sign up for cable internet/tv package and we picked an installation date, etc. but they asked if i already had my own modem? otherwise there was a charge for me to get one from them? i do not need wireless internet since i have a desktop, but they still offered a non-wireless modem? do i need that?

- they mean an ethernet port it's the rectangular port with a led near it
- Right click My Computer icon -> Manage -> Device Manager. If you see modem listed there, means you have modem installed
- If your not looking to go wireless (because you have a desktop i guess thats a no) then you will need a modem, a modem is basically a box that connects the computer to the phone line, if you've never had an internet broadband connection before then you'll need one. And yes you do need a modem to connect to the internet.
- you need a modem from them. its the box with all the lights
- You will need a cable modem if you are not brining one with you. I uploaded a picture of one to tinypic for you http://i31.tinypic.com/9le6uf.jpg "A cable modem is a type of modem that provides access to a data signal sent over the cable television infrastructure. Cable modems are primarily used to deliver broadband Internet access in the form of cable Internet, taking advantage of unused bandwidth on a cable television network."
- You can buy your own cable Internet modem at most retailers such as BestBuy, etc... That is what they mean. Computers can have telephone modems preinstalled (it's an option now, as opposed to automatically installed) but I have never seen a broadband modem in a machine. Whether you need wireless Internet is not dependent upon you having a desktop...If your computer is not near a cable connector, you can either run a wire to your PC or go wireless. I would suggest getting the wireless modem, even if you hardwire your computer to it. You may have the need for it in the future. Cheers!
