when i am using my ibm t23 laptop my screen goes black and it will not let me shut down my computer. Why?

The screen will be all black except for a line running horizontally. Prior to this my problem was my computer would lock up only leaving the option of shutting it down by pusshing and holding the power button.

1. sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Probably the video board. has the laptop been dropped or hit hard?
