Can someone tell me why my volume on my computer will not work?

My computer is not on mute and the volume is not all the way down. I have an IBM laptop computer.

1. many laptops use the "Function" key with one of the F1 - F12 keys to turn sound on or off. Look for a small speaker icon on one of your function keys 1-12 On my dell it is the Function key and F4 to turn off sound then F5 to turn in on and louder by constant tapping.
