What is a "pan error" when trying to start up my laptop, computer keeps turing off?

Lately when I try to power up my IBM Laptop, it starts to power up and then turns off. I try it several times and it continues to turn off. I think the screen says "pan error." Eventually I have been able to get it up. Do you know what causes this? How do I prevent it?
