What are the different types of RAMs for desktop computers?
If you'll read my earlier question about my accident putting the ram in you'll know what I'm talking about. But anyway the new ram that I put in was apparently the wrong size. It was brand new ram but when I compared the new ram next to the old ram (6 months old) and the notch in the middle in the old ram is literally less than a quarter of an inch different. The package for the new ram says it is DDR2. So would the other kind be DDR? If so what are the differences? Thanks. Sorry, My computer model is Dell Dimension B110. The ram I put in was DDR2. (at least that's what it said on the box)

- It would be far easier if you just told us the make and model of your computer so that we can point you to the right modules. UPDATED RESPONSE: Your system uses DDR, not DDR2. Standard 184-pin PC3200 DDR to be exact. You can order it here at the links below, or get it wherever you choose. http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?mfr=Dell&model=Dimension+B110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052107965+1052407862&name=DDR+400+(PC+3200)
- I can answer your first question about types of ram: FPM RAM/89.03MM EDO RAM/108.20MM SD RAM/133.80MM DDR RAM/133.35MM DDR2 RAM/133.35MM RAMBUS(RIMM)RAM /133.50MM
- you either have DDR4 or DDR2 how old is your PC?? best thing is to remove the memory you have most of the time they have a sticker on it telling you what it is either DDR4 or DDR2
- The notches don't match up because there are a different number of pins. Standard DDR (double data rate) has 184 pins while DDR2 has 240. DDR is an older model and is slowly being phased out due to DDR2 lower latency rates and higher clock speed. DDR stops at around 400Mhz while DDR2 is approaching 1Ghz. Another notable difference is bandwidth, and again DDR2 is increasing beyond standard DDR with improved Dual-channel and even Quad-Channel. The channel denotes how many sticks operate together, and are usually bought as a "kit". They operate more effectively than 2 or 4 seperate sticks, but require a motherboard capable of operating Dual/Quad Channel. To my knowledge Dual-Channel MB's will only operate with RAM kits. The best way to find suitable ram for your computer is to either go the computer or motherboard manufacturer's website and find which is compatible and what it is expandable to.
- DDR is a 184 pin DIMM and that is what is installed in your B110. DDR2 is a 240 pin DIMM and will not work in your computer. DDR memory is for older systems that require RAM speeds up to PC-4000 and have slower processors. DDR2 is for newer system that require RAM speeds of PC-3200 or greater that have faster processors. The higher RAM speed provides greater bandwidth for data transfer to meet the needs of the faster processors.
