Our computer has a virus. How can we fix it and prevent it from happening again?

We believe it's a virus. We try and access differant web-sites and the screens keep changing. Also, we are finding strange icons on our desktop. We tried downloading a free microsoft virus protection package but it didn't help. Should we take the computer in for repair or have a technician come to the house? This computer is a few years old and apparently the virus protection package that came with the system has expired. Help!!!!

1. Assuming you are using Windows, get Norton AnitVirus. It retails for $40 and is sold at all department and computer stores. It will remove existing viruses, while protecting you from viruses in the future. Having a technician come to your house should only be the last straw, it's very expensive and usually unnecessary. If your computer is outdated, you could also just buy a new one. Just make sure you put antivirus software on it right away.
