Just Got a computer from a garage sale problem is they had it for so long that they cant remember password?

The password to the administrator account was forgotten. I was told that I can wipe that out by changing the hard drive and start with basically a new computer. I'm a little computer illeterate what is OS?

2. Is the window sticker on the PC still? It should have a code on it. If not do they have it? If so use a Windows CD to reinstall the OS using the key code on the PC or from them. If you don't have that, then you'll have to go buy a new OS like windows XP or Vista. A new hard drive is not required.

4. Get the original operating system software from them and reinstall it and you can change the admin password.
